A study with animals in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that alcohol abuse in adolescence leads to a lifetime of poor decision-making skills. Karen Hopkin reports.

We all know that drinking can cloud judgment. That’s why you should never e-mail an ex after you’ve had a few. But for teenagers, doing dumb things now because of alcohol may be just the start. Because research with animals suggests that drinking during adolescence can set you up for a whole lifetime of bad decisions. The study is in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

People who abuse alcohol when they’re young don’t always make good choices as adults. But it’s been unclear whether the drink gives them the stupids, or whether folks prone to poor choices are predisposed to drink.

One way to tackle the question is by studying alcohol intake in animals, like rats. But rats don’t like to drink. So to make the alcohol more palatable, scientists infused it into a tasty “gel matrix”. Yes, the researchers gave teenage rats Jello shots. And the animals’ decision-making ability stayed impaired well into adulthood…as measured by their tendency to chase after rewards with associated high risk rather than taking a sure thing. So, young party animals, remember the words of Faber’s Dean Wormer: “Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”—Karen Hopkin.

LastMonday,we had a school meeting and our headmaster spoke highly of a kind boy, whose name is LiHua.The boy is a Junior high school student.we all respect him very much because of his kindness.

One day, LiHua went to school by bus as usual. when he was ready to get on the bus,he saw a thief stealing a woman's wallet, and there is a knife in his hand. LiHua was afraid that the thief would hurt other people on the bus. Suddenly, a good idea came to his mind. He walked to the woman and said" Mum,I want to use your mobilphone''. Soon, the woman realized what happened and replied,"ok, I will give it to you". The driver noticed the thief. He drived the bus to the police station. At last, the thief was under control. Later, the woman sent a letter to our school to express her thanks to Li Hua.

Though I am a senior high school student, I cant do as well as LiHua. His kindness touched me,including all of you. As we all know, a kind heart is important for everyone. Kindness can make the world more beautiful and more lovable. In other words, if the world is a cup, kindness is like cofee, which makes the world meaningful.

Of all the knowledge we have, some comes from the books we read, some comes from personal experience in our lives. different people attach different importance to different sources. the young and the educated, for example, may emphasize the former, the old may, however stress the latter. in my opinion, both book knowledge and personal experience are of equal importance.

knowledge gained from experience may be firsthand, direct, and unforgettable. books in the library may be outdated, giving you useless information. everything is changing and so is knowledge. if you go out to make on the-spot investigations instead of depending on books, it is likely that you may be pleasantly surprised. moreover, knowledge you get from your own experience will be everlasting. therefore, it is important that students get involved in practical activities to accumulate different kinds of experience.experience, however, is limited in terms of time and space. it is impossible for anyone to experience everything to get the knowledge he needs. in addition, society is developing so fast that new problems come up with surprising speed. over depending on experience could, therefore, make a person narrow minded and prejudiced.

books are a summary of the wisdom of our ancestors. the best way to gain know ledge is, of course, to read books, and in the meantime, participate in various kinds of practical activities. a combination of the two will sure[y make us full and well informed.

Having heard that the kids in the class were extremely naughty, and having known that several English teachers came and went off, I was determined to take a challenge.

On the way to the classroom, I felt a little nervous. What would they do with me? Would they play tricks on me? Were they like monsters or devils? I breathed deeply and said to myself, “God save me.”

The moment I appeared in the classroom, all the eyes were fixed on me. A silence fell down and soon they burst into laughter. The whole class was like a boiling pot. Some students murmured, some chatted, some laughed, some even whistled loudly. I was empty-minded and didn’t know what to say and how to deal with them. I could feel my face and ears burning, and I could even hear my heart beating. I tried to regain all my strength to calm down. Looking around the classroom, with a pretended smile on my face, I cleared my voice twice to draw their attention. But nobody seemed to take notice of me. I was so angry that my smile froze and disappeared. I paused and stared at the ceiling, wondering whether I should go or stay. Unexpectedly, the noise in the classroom died down. I lowered my head and looked straight. To my great surprise, nearly all the students sat still on their chairs, looking at me attentively. I was a little puzzled. Why did they behave themselves so soon? Were they frightened? I could not wait to make it clear. Anyway, they were quiet. I would take the chance to make myself known to them.

“Hello, I am your new English teacher. My name is Lawrence. Nice to meet you.” I paused, waiting for their response. No reply. Didn’t they understand me? Were they so poor at English that they did not know what I was saying? The classroom was in such a terrible silence that I could hear them breathing. I felt it was useless talking too much to them. What was the most important for me was to break the silence. Instead of introducing myself afterwards, I asked them, “What do you want to know or say?”

“Sir, you are too short.” said a boy who was actually taller than me, followed by a storm of laughter. I was embarrassed as if he had thrown a handful of salt to my scar.

I used to hang out with my foreign friends in coffee bars or somewhere else we liked to have a gathering. We talked about anything we were interested in and we sometimes made funny conclusions. I, somehow, believe that some of the conclusions are so right that even somebody from authorities could not deny them!

Having been an English teacher in China for three years, a Canadian friend of mine concluded that the Chinese people are not happy, at least they don’t look like they are. She had her reasons and I took them as reasonable ones. She walked to office and home every day. And she liked to observe the people passing by her. She found out that most of the passer-bys did not look happy. Even though some people said “Hi” to her, she only took that as kind of tease, because of the way they speaking it.

She said the Chinese people were either not friendly or too friendly to her. She made some examples to show that she was right. I had a small rebate against her and later on I gave it up. I knew some of her comments on our Chinese people are right. She also had lots of misunderstandings, which I took that as a natural thing. Most of her opinions still make sense now!

The other thing happened to her is one day she was taking shower inside a publish bathroom, when a mid-age women went straightly and directly to her, touching her breasts and holding them for a second without noticing her and said: What big breasts! She told me she was almost scared the shits out of her. She said: What the f*ck are you doing to the women, but she just smiled and stepped away. My Canadian friend took it as a great insult, and she never goes to that bathroom again!

Except saying that is an unexceptional case in China, I could say nothing, cause I knew some people would do that in China. After all, we do have less-educated or none-educated people in our country.

Give your comments to me if you have encountered or been told anything similar to this case.
